Weight Management for Pets

Recent estimates suggest that about 35% of pets in Canada are obese. Veterinarians have also estimated that more than half of pets do not get enough exercise throughout the day. Our furry family members are becoming heavier and because of that, they are more likely to come down with conditions such as liver disease and cancer. With the help of our veterinary team, we can help your pet reach and remain at healthy body weight. Please feel free to call us at 613.543.2812 to schedule your pet’s next appointment.

When is a dog or cat considered to be overweight?

Because of the wide range of species and breeds of pets, determining a healthy weight range is quite difficult to do. As a general rule, if you cannot feel the definition of your pet’s hips/waist, or if you cannot feel their lower ribs under their skin or fur, chances are they are overweight.

How can I help my cat/dog lose weight?

It all boils down to a lifestyle change. Little things like getting your pet to play, walk or be outside more often can go a long way. Lessening their food portions and limiting their treats will also help. The best thing to do is to come in for a checkup, so that the veterinarian can tell you specifically which products or activities will help your pet lose (or gain) weight.

What is offered during a nutritional consultation?

Getting your pet in shape is not always as simple as getting them to eat less and move more. At a nutritional consultation, you will receive a proper “game plan” that is tailored specifically for you and your pet. It is truly the best option, instead of following ineffective and potentially dangerous advice on the internet or via other means.
