Spay and Neutering for Pets

Overpopulation neglected strays and overcrowded animal shelters are all issues that you can help make a positive impact on by having your pet spayed or neutered. These routine procedures save the lives of millions of animals per year and go a long way in lessening the burden felt by rescue shelters. To learn more about the spay and neutering services at Morrisburg Animal Hospital, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at 613.543.2812.

What does neutering/spaying do to a pet?

When a female pet is spayed, its uterus and ovaries are surgically removed. For males, neutering is the removal of the testes from the scrotal sac. The procedures will prevent your pet from reproducing.

Is spaying or neutering safe for pets?

Yes. Both are routine procedures performed by our team. They pose a minimal surgical risk and post-operative pain. In most cases, your furry friend will even be able to go home with you right after their procedure!

When should my pet be fixed?

Ideally, cats and dogs should undergo these surgeries before they reach sexual maturity. More often than not, spays and neuters are performed between 8 and 16 weeks of age. That being said, the procedures can be safely performed well into their adulthood.

What are the benefits of spaying or neutering?

These procedures can reduce restlessness in your pet and decrease their likelihood of developing aggressive behaviours such as spraying. There are so many other health benefits that your pet can experience from their surgery.

For example, pets who have been fixed tend to live longer and have a lowered chance of developing multiple types of diseases such as uterine, ovarian, mammary and testicular cancer.
